I am off to Lake Como in the near future. I alternate between panicking about our dog trainer/ K9 dog whisperer not liking our new dog, and the Euro making a grand slam comeback in the next five days, sabotaging my plans for plundering the boutiques. When I calm the inner voice I realize, the dog trainer loves all dogs (thus his profession), and I would rather be on the lake than shopping anyway.
The Grand Hotel Tremezzo will be our base for exploring and their concierge team has done an amazing job of assisting with our plans. My husband and I are looking forward to walking through the romantic gardens. Our kids are looking forward to the pool floating on the lake. You can look forward to hearing about boats, gardens, shopping, gelato and more. Ciao.
Gardens: Lake Como is famous for it’s gorgeous villas and gardens. Lucky for us one of the most famous, Villa Carlotta, lies just adjacent to the hotel. In the early eighteenth century, the Villa Carlotta landed its spot on The Grand Tour under the ownership of Gian Battista Sommariva. A patron of the arts he spared no expense transforming the villas parks into romantic, intricate gardens.
Villa del Balbianello lies in Como near Lenno. The Italian villa is built on the land that was once called home by Franciscan monks. In the twentieth century the villa and its gardens were built and restored first by American Butler Ames and then Italian Guido Monzino. Villa del Balbienello is the Hollywood of Como and was used for fiming parts of Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones, Casino Royale, and A Month By The Lake.
Dining: We are excited to dine at the famous Isola Comacina. This is the only island on the lake and the restaurant, Locanda dell’Isola Comacina, has been serving the same set menu for over seventy five years.
The Market Place is a relatively new restaurant that friends and publications have raved about. It’s a farm to table concept restaurant (although compared to the US, I feel like almost all small restaurants in Europe are a bit farm to table). It has two dozen seats and books up quickly, reserve in advance.
